An accredited online institution ensures that students get adequate online guidance from their instructors with the use of internet tools. Challenging individual and group projects may be given by your professors, for which you can use various online resources. Forums, message boards and chat rooms are often provided in online college websites to have a venue for and encourage interaction between online students.

Employers are also generally confident that online graduates have skills as competitive as those who got their programs the traditional way.

Once you’ve made up your mind to continue your studies through online training, the next step is to choose the right degree program and online class to enroll in. Keep the following in mind:

1. When choosing a field of study, you may want to consider what kind of career may be lucrative for you.

2. For institutions who are not purely online and have physical campuses, check if there’s still a residency requirement or if you’ll have to occasionally show up for exams, etc. Consider if you can work these in your schedule.

3. See if the credits you’ll be getting from an online postgraduate school will be transferable just in case you’ll have to continue with another school at some point.

4. Check if the online two-year college has resources like an online library and tutorial services. You may want to get more value out of your enrollment.

5. Beware online diploma mills, especially if what you’re really after is learning that can be of use in your future career.

6. Most importantly, check if the online community college is accredited by the appropriate regional agency. Your diploma will be useless if not issued by an accredited university.

Career Opportunity – Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)

by Jane Grey

The nursing qualification ladder begins with the Licensed Practical Nurse or LPN. If you wish to qualify as an LPN you must complete a training course approved by the State Board of Nursing. The qualification program lasts approximately 18 months to two years. Some school courses may be as little as 12 months. In order to achieve full qualification prospective candidates who have completed the approved program must then pass an examination.

The name of the examination you must pass in order to get licensed is NCLEX-PN. It is essential for students to pass this examination if you actually want to practice as a nurse. As a licensed nurse you will be able to carry out a range of medical procedures from simple to complex. LPN’s are however required to be supervised by a Registered Nurse (RN) or a physician.

Prior to being admitted to an authorized training program a candidate usually has to show that as a minimum they have achieved a high school diploma. They must also demonstrate that they have not been prosecuted for any criminal activities. It is however increasingly possible, due mainly to increasing demand for the LPN qualification, to start the training course without the high school diploma. In fact, there are instances these days whereby a student can commence the LPN training process through vocational programs whilst they are still in high school.

As a prospective student you are spoilt for choice as there are a large number of approved training programs across the country. All these schools offer the necessary qualification programs.

In fact according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics from 2006 the total number of state approved training courses exceeded 1,500 in practical nursing programs. Many more qualification programs have sprung up since 2006 many of which have been designed specifically for completion by online students.

There is a clinical aspect to all the qualification courses. This may be difficult to undertake on a distance learning basis. As a result it is not unlikely that students would be required to attend some form of organized clinical training events. This should not present a significant problem as there are many local vocation schools, technical programs and community colleges that offer complete courses or just specific aspects of the training regime.

Once a student has attained the LPN qualification they are capable of taking on a variety of different activities. The scope of these activities range from simple measurements, for instance temperature or blood pressure measurement, on to administering CPR on a patient who may be suffering a heart attack. Most normally the LPN’s role will be to administer good quality care to infirm, elderly or recuperating patients in a caring environment.

Do you go to bed every night wondering just how the recession is going to affect your career?

by Darcy McCarthy, PHd

The combination of tough economic times and stories of impending doom have caused crucial introspection for most people. This article is in response to a number of questions readers have sent to educationline.org.

Eric Hoffer offered a quotation that is very fitting to set the pace for this article. It goes as such: In a time of drastic change it is the learners who inherit the future. The learned usually find themselves equipped to live in a world that no longer exists.

As a general rule, our readers write to find out what are the best online education universities, classes, colleges, degrees. However, as of late the questions have become much more focused on career training and whether or not now is a good time to continue complete or enhance their education. Here are the top three questions and answers:

Q. I have an undergraduate degree, and am a professional. Should I consider completing my full degree even with rumor of layoffs in my industry? Sometimes it is best to answer a question with another question. Where do you want to be in 10 years? If you go back to University on a full time basis, you would have to quit your job now and invest in your education further. Now looking at a 10 year term, if you consider online education you can do it on a part time basis to complete your degree. This will give you an upper hand on your future job seekers.

Q. I recently became a victim of a layoff, I am considering changing my career but I dont know what to take? Take a step backwards, think what appeals to you. Look into educational facilities, both online and as well night classes or weekend classes. Do a bit of research into what prospects are out there in the world for those skills. Are they really marketable? Consider going to do some online research into salaries and requirements for those careers. A very good source of information for this is Monster.com, jobboom, as well as local employment agencies websites.

Q. I have decided to go back to school. Im not sure if I should go full time, part time (nights and weekends) or online? A. You need to think about your finances here. Can you afford to go back to school full-time? Now while attending part-time takes more time, it is generally much easier on your pocket book. In addition, you can pay as you go versus paying an entire semesters fees. Another viable alternative is online education, again you can do it at your own speed and pay as you go.

Tough economic times are generally a good time to evaluate where you are and where you need to go. Things you should be asking yourself is: Is my income sufficient? Is my career rewarding? Is my career in jeopardy? With jobs becoming more difficult to find, upgrading your education gives you a definitive edge. Our recommendation is pursuing your education online due to the versatility and availability of online education degrees.
