Do online colleges offer the same opportunities and educational value that is offered by a traditional school? Most universities offer some courses over the Internet and more are likely to in the future. Online degrees are an increasingly popular choice in today’s fast-paced world.

Why is it popular? Convenience is one big thing. Particularly for someone that already has a job. It is much easier to sit down in front of the computer after work than it would be to get to a campus. Flexibility is another issue. Traditional campuses offer specific classes on specific days, at specific times. Online colleges offer classes 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Many parents have found that earning online degrees is the best choice for their continuing education. If mom signs up for a class at a traditional campus and the kids get sick or dad gets stuck working late, she misses the class. Staying at home with sick kids is a perfect time to log on to the Internet and learn something new.

But, are online degrees equivalent to those that you might earn at a traditional institution? The best way to determine the answer to that question is to talk to people who are currently working in your field of choice. For example, if your hope was to land a job with IBM, you could call their hiring staff and ask their opinions. All jobs have qualifications. Nothing would be more disappointing than to find out, after the fact, that your degree does not allow you to meet those qualifications.

Online colleges are not the right choice for everyone. People have different learning styles and differing amounts of self motivation. It may be the ideal choice for you or you may need more teacher interaction. Think about the education that you have had to this point. Did you find that you learned more from lectures or from book study? If you answer book study, then Internet classes will work perfectly, but some courses include videotaped lectures, too. Most universities work hard to meet their students’ needs.

If you are a busy person, you might want to consider how much time you have to devote to this program, as well. Online degrees do take time. There are some scammers that would tell you otherwise, but as long as you enroll at an accredited university, you will need to spend some or all of your free time studying.

Some students need the structured environment and the “obligation” of going to class in order to complete a program. On the other hand, a busy person is not likely to have the time to attend a traditional campus either. The bottom line is that online colleges offer the opportunity of higher education to people that might not otherwise be able to achieve their goals in the traditional classroom environment.
