Whether you attend classes on a college campus or are enrolled in an online university, if you are older than a traditional college student, you face challenges your younger classmates do not. While they may focus entirely on earning a degree, you have to balance work, family, and academics. Here’s how you can make it a bit easier.

1. Carefully put together a weekly schedule that includes all of your other obligations, and the hours you plan to dedicate to academic pursuits. Then, do not ever do less schoolwork than you have scheduled or miss a scheduled block of study time.

2. Make a “to do” list of your assignments, putting the most important first. Then, complete them in order. When in doubt, schedule your most difficult assignments first.

3. Set up a study area with a comfortable chair, desk, a computer with Internet service, and good lighting. You’ll get more done if you study in a proper environment.

4. Build study breaks into your schedule. And, walk away for a few minutes if you become frustrated or discouraged by a particularly challenging assignment (especially a long, difficult reading assignment). A quick break can do wonders.

5. Help your family and friends understand your commitment to higher education and the importance of your earning a degree. And, establish a “do not disturb” policy during your scheduled study time.

6. Be realistic about the number of courses in which you enroll. Do not overburden yourself. Students who take on too much are far more likely to drop out before meeting their educational goals.

All things being equal, would you rather take a class at a suboptimal local university or Oxford? Cost is an important consideration when choosing a class. Online classes are generally cheaper than traditional classroom courses. The economies of scale online make it possible for universities to offer these courses at a much lower price.

Super! You have been accepted into the masters degree you applied for. The future of your career certainly looks promising. Now the question is, what will it take to complete the degree on time and with little stress? Let us look at this step-by-step. Returning to school is certainly a longterm commitment which requires months or years of sacrifice and good planning. The good news is that it is possible to take some actions that will make your time in the program more manageable.

Step 1 – Create a Program of study early in your program. Many masters programs required at least 36 credit hours but double check with your university. Most schools will also have a program of study available for you to fill out. Be sure to also take at least the minimum number of credit hours or some programs may automatically drop your enrollment thinking you have elected to discontinue. Look at the projected course offerings so that you can plan ahead.

Step 2 – Enroll in and complete all your courses. Of course be careful when planning your course load. It is always advisable to contact and meet your your academic advisor at least once or twice each academic term so as to discuss your experiences and accomplishments in the program.

Step 3 – Pull together your thesis advisement committee. If your department requires you to write a thesis, or research project you may need the input of several faculty members. Consult with your advisor on whom would best serve on your committee to guide you in your research.

Step 4 – Learn more about your new career. While in the program, learn more about the new profession or career you will be embarking on. This could be in the form of internships, research assistant, through your courses, or conducting your own research.

Step 5 – Prepare your thesis. If your department requires you to write a thesis, work with your advisor or committee do develop this. This can be challenging and time consuming but if done well you will be proud of your accomplishments. If you are not required to do a thesis, find out if a comprehensive exam or portfolio is required instead. Some program do give you choices, so find out what they are.

Step 6 – Start doing research on available jobs. Put together a professional portfolio that can include your CV, artifacts, references etc. Highlight your qualifications and best products. Also, you want to keep a log of potential jobs you might apply to so that as you go through the program you will make informed decisions. Do not wait until you graduate to start this research, so that if it takes a while to locate your ideal job you will not become frustrated.

Step 7 – Apply for graduation. At some point during your program of study, apply for graduation. Be sure to check the deadlines. Some come up very early in the program, and you certainly do not want to miss that.

If flexibility is important for you, you might consider taking online classes or enrolling in programs that have options such as evenings and weekends. While it is important to graduate, it is even more important to ensure that the program you graduate from is accredited. No sense graduating with a degree that no one will recognize.
